With some residents approaching their third week without power, the Long Island Power Authority has removed the Rockaways from its power outage map, citing the area as simply too damaged by Superstorm Sandy to restore electrical service at this time.

Nick Lizanich, vice president of transmission and distribution at LIPA, said that restoring power in the Rockaways in its current condition could potentially create a dangerous situation because many of the homes that sustained flood damage contained massive amounts of water that came out of the ocean and Jamaica Bay, leaving electrical panels under water.

“When it is under water, especially sea water, you end up with salt contamination and debris contamination, such that if we were to try and put the power on, there is the possibility the house could catch on fire,” Lizanich said.

New Jersey Residents Suffer Cold and Dark as Many Still Lack Power After Storms

pbs.org - November 9th, 2012 - Rick Karr

The homes of some New Jersey residents have been without power or heat more than 10 days after superstorm Sandy struck. Should Gas Stations be Required to Have On-Site Generators? Change.org Petition Says 'YES'!

With motorists in areas ravaged by Hurricane Sandy still struggling to find gasoline, lawmakers in New York and New Jersey have vowed to introduce legislation aimed at preventing shortages in future disasters. They are seeking to mandate that gas stations maintain on-site generators so they can pump fuel even during power outages.

The gas station industry is already threatening to fight back, complaining that it should not be required to secure its own power supply when other industries do not face similar mandates.

Huffingtonpost.com - Christina Wilkie - November 5, 2012

Here is the Change.Org petition that simply states:

Make it MANDATORY for all gas stations to be equipped with generators

In a time of crisis we would still be able to fuel our cars and or generators to keep New Yorkers safe and working .We all know what happens without these generators!

Few Big FEMA Generators Humming

Video: Before Sandy struck, Federal Emergency Management Agency officials said they had 400 industrial-size power generators ready to help the East Coast. Three days after Sandy landed, only a fraction of that equipment is actually providing power.

online.wsj.com - November 2nd, 2012 - Devlin Barrett

Before Sandy struck, Federal Emergency Management Agency officials said they had 400 industrial-size power generators ready to help the East Coast. Three days after Sandy landed, only a fraction of that equipment is actually providing power, despite the fact that millions are still without electricity.

On Thursday, FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate said four generators were installed overnight. He said that by the end of the day, he expected there would be roughly 70 generators installed in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut, but his figures didn't jibe with those from state officials.
