Doctors of the World Opens First U.S. Clinic in Rockaways

While Hurricane Sandy was 10 months ago, the storm's damage continues to impact individuals on a daily basis. It is estimated that nearly 60% of healthcare providers still remain closed due to storm damage.

Doctors of the World USA's (MdM USA) initial efforts following the storm were centered on identifying local residents who lack access to healthcare and bringing volunteer doctors for home visits in the Rockaways section of Queens, NY. While deploying these services, the chronic deficit in healthcare infrastructure in the area has also become evident.

Prior to the hurricane, the Rockaways already had federal designation as a Medically Underserved Area and a Health Professional Shortage Area. Twenty-two percent of area residents live below the poverty line and 24% lack consistent health insurance coverage.  

It is in response to this situational observation and direct community requests that MdM USA will open its free medical clinic, the Doctors of the World Rockaways Free Clinic in Rockaway Park, New York.

A new ABC news program called the Lookout debuts tonight (at 10pm) and features a segment examining the sometimes dubious practices of mold inspectors and contractors as they conduct an inspection of a high-end suburban NJ home.  Myself and Prof. Richard Shaughnessy of U. of Tulsa provide the play by play and color commentary (no scripts, no rehearsals) while the hidden cameras capture the diverse conclusions of the good guys and bad guys as they present their findings and recommendations to the homeowner.

Nassau: Wastewater Spills Into Channel

An estimated 3 million gallons of "partially treated wastewater" from the Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant discharged into Reynolds Channel during a brief power outage late Thursday, Nassau County reported on its website.

The spill occurred about 11 p.m. and lasted about an hour, according to a spill report posted Friday on the website.  The state Department of Environmental Conservation was informed shortly after midnight, the report said. "That's a significant spill," said Adrienne Esposito, executive director of the Citizens Campaign for the Environment, adding that the spill comes at the start of flounder season. "We heard there were boats fishing right there and they didn't know it spilled."

Nassau officials could not be reached for comment last night.

The plant on Nassau's South Shore dumped about 100 million gallons of untreated sewage into Hewlett Bay when it was knocked out of service for 44 hours during superstorm Sandy. In the 44 days it took to restore operations fully at the plant, another 2.2 billion gallons of partially treated sewage flowed through the plant.

On January 24, 2013, the Committee on Aging, chaired by Council Member Jessica Lappin; the Committee on Health, chaired by Council Member Maria del Carmen Arroyo; and the Committee on Mental Health, Developmental Disability, Alcoholism, Drug Abuse, and Disability Services, chaired by Council Member G. Oliver Koppell (collectively “the Committees”), will hold an oversight hearing entitled “Emergency Planning and Management During and After the Storm: Emergency Preparedness and Response at the City’s Healthcare Facilities.” This hearing will explore and review the decision not to evacuate health care facilities in advance of the storm, disaster planning at healthcare facilities, the execution and outcomes of evacuations conducted during and following the storm, and the continuity of care for affected patients and residents. Witnesses invited to testify include representatives of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, the Greater New York Hospital Association, and health care facilities, and advocates. This is the fourth in a series of Hurricane Sandy related oversight hearings conducted by the Council.

NOAA, USGS: Climate Change Impacts to U.S. Coasts Threaten Public Health, Safety and Economy

According to a new technical report, the effects of climate change will continue to threaten the health and vitality of U.S. coastal communities’ social, economic and natural systems. The report, Coastal Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerabilities: a technical input to the 2013 National Climate Assessment, authored by leading scientists and experts, emphasizes the need for increased coordination and planning to ensure U.S. coastal communities are resilient against the effects of climate change.

The recently-released report examines and describes climate change impacts on coastal ecosystems and human economies and communities, as well as the kinds of scientific data, planning tools and resources that coastal communities and resource managers need to help them adapt to these changes.

A rush on flu shots sparked by Gov. Cuomo’s health emergency declaration has left some city pharmacies and urgent care facilities empty handed.

“We ran out,” said Dr. Mark Melrose, an emergency physician and owner of Urgent Care Manhattan on Amsterdam Ave. on the upper West Side.

Melrose said his supply went dry Saturday after doling out 10 times the normal number of flu shots to victims of the coughing—sneezing-head-feverish epidemic sweeping the nation.

State is experiencing worst flu season since at least 2009, Cuomo says

This flu season is nothing to sneeze at.

Gov. Cuomo declared a statewide public health emergency Saturday to combat what’s already been a severe flu season.

The declaration will make it easier for vaccinations to get to more children.

“We are experiencing the worst flu season since at least 2009, and influenza activity in New York State is widespread, with cases reported in all 57 counties and all five boroughs of New York City,” Cuomo said.
