Some U.S. states see new covid cases increase.

Across the United States, officials have dropped mask mandates and are closing mass vaccine and testing sites as new coronavirus cases have fallen nationally to about 27,000 a day on average. But several states — mostly in the Northeast — have had some increases in case numbers over the past two weeks, according to a New York Times database

State official: NY doesn't expect 'steep surge' from variant ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York's top health official said Monday that she doesn't expect to see a big surge in COVID-19 cases in the state as a new subvariant of the virus grows more prevalent. The omicron variant BA.2, commonly known as “stealth omicron," now represents 42% of all cases in New York, according to state Health Commissioner Mary Bassett. AP NEWS

C.D.C. no longer recommends universal case investigation and contact tracing in the U.S.

Almost two years after the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention called for 100,000 contact tracers to contain the coronavirus, the C.D.C. said this week that it no longer recommends universal case investigation and contact tracing. Instead it encourages health departments to focus those practices on high-risk settings.
