Yesterdays meetings were addressing the lack actual help getting to all the communities in the effected areas efficiently and bypassing the NGO’s who have dug in, come and gone leaving in their wake a false sense to outsiders that everything is resolved.

69. Breezy Point (Gateway National Recreation Area)

Had you planned a visit to Breezy Point before the Civil War you would have been in for a surprise. It did not exist! All the land west of the vicinity of Jacob Riis Park has formed within a little more than a century (Figure 184). This is largely because of the construction of a groin field to protect the beaches at Fort Tilden, and the placement of the Breezy Point jetty to prevent the filling of Rockaway Inlet. The sand has been contributed naturally by the westward longshore drift along the south shore of Long Island, particularly the Rockaway barrier island and sources offshore.

Pet owners who are currently unable to care for their animals due to Hurricane Sandy can place them in this temporary boarding facility, now through Monday, December 17. Intake hours are 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Hurricane Sandy Community Relief Efforts in The Rockaways

In the weeks after Hurricane Sandy devastated a huge portion of the eastern seaboard, volunteer and relief efforts quickly began to spring up all over hard-hit areas such as the Rockaways in Queens, NY. Even the likes of Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake showed up to distribute supplies. This video showcases the grassroots efforts of organizations and individual volunteers in the Rockaways who have tirelessly worked to help those in dire need of basic living essentials and supplies. As of now, the majority of homes and apartments in the Rockaways are still without power.

What a mess.

Billions of gallons of human waste have poured into New York Harbor since Hurricane Sandy hit the region, NBC reports.

The waste is coming from the fifth largest sewage treatment plant in the nation, based in Newark, New Jersey.
