Nassau: Wastewater Spills Into Channel

submitted by Doug Kuntz

newsday.com - May 10, 2013

An estimated 3 million gallons of "partially treated wastewater" from the Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant discharged into Reynolds Channel during a brief power outage late Thursday, Nassau County reported on its website.

The spill occurred about 11 p.m. and lasted about an hour, according to a spill report posted Friday on the website.  The state Department of Environmental Conservation was informed shortly after midnight, the report said. "That's a significant spill," said Adrienne Esposito, executive director of the Citizens Campaign for the Environment, adding that the spill comes at the start of flounder season. "We heard there were boats fishing right there and they didn't know it spilled."

Nassau officials could not be reached for comment last night.

The plant on Nassau's South Shore dumped about 100 million gallons of untreated sewage into Hewlett Bay when it was knocked out of service for 44 hours during superstorm Sandy. In the 44 days it took to restore operations fully at the plant, another 2.2 billion gallons of partially treated sewage flowed through the plant.

Long Beach Community Meeting with FEMA Scheduled for Wednesday, May 1, 6pm at City Hall

On Wednesday, May 1st at 6 p.m. there will be an open community forum hosted by the City of Long Beach along with FEMA and New York State.

The forum will consist of representatives from FEMA, City and New York State to discuss programs and assistance in the wake of Superstorm Sandy.  FEMA will discuss programs and assistance such as the Increase Cost of Compliance Program (ICC), Hazard Mitigation Program (HMGP) and the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).  New York State representatives from the Department of Financial Services the NY Sandy Help Program will also be present to discuss programs and answer frequently asked questions.  City of Long Beach representatives will be available to answer questions regarding the permit process as well as any other Building Department matters.

Information on Programs to be Discussed

Increased Cost of Compliance (ICC)

ICC coverage under FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program is one of several resources for flood insurance policyholders. Under ICC, FEMA offers $30,000 for homeowners to help cover the costs of mitigation measures that will reduce flood risk, including raising the height of houses that the agency mandates for new buildings or rebuilding in designated flood zones such as Long Beach.

LONG BEACH, N.Y. — It is February, but the smell of Christmas wafts up from the shores of Long Beach these days.

Thousands of Christmas trees, stripped of lights and ornaments, have been arranged along the beach here as part of an unusual plan to restore the protective dunes washed away byHurricane Sandy. The trees are supposed to catch sand blown by the wind, until gradually the dunes grow up around them.

Rebuilding Long Beach - Starting with Heart & Soul of the City - the Boardwalk

Those of us who grew up playing skee-ball on the Long Beach boardwalk and, as adults, live and play along this magnificent beach, can't help but shed a tear as we say 'Good-bye' to a huge part of our life.

But with each tear there is also hope that the new boardwalk will be developed with the future in mind.  As City Councilman Scott Mandel said: "The city will look to rebuild the boardwalk in a way that better protects it from natural disasters".

Here's hoping that we will soon be back on the volleyball courts, back in the waves, and back on the new and improved Long Beach Boardwalk ...

Gas Rationing Begins on LI and in NYC on Friday, November 9

nydailynews.com - November 8, 2012 - Victoria Cavaliere

'Following in the footsteps of New Jersey, Mayor Bloomberg on Thursday signed "an emergency order to establish an odd-even license plate system" to cut down on wait times as consumers queue at gas stations to fill up their tanks.

The measure will go into effect at 6 a.m. Friday.

Long Island, also reeling from gas shortages following Hurricane Sandy, will begin a rationing program in Suffolk and Nassau Counties starting at 5 p.m. Friday.

Drivers with license plates ending in an even number can buy only on even-numbered days. Drivers with license plates ending in an odd number can buy on odd-numbered days. Vanity plates are considered odd.'
