Local dealers say at least this is one headache that people can get rid of painlessly.

With personal tragedies, devastated homes, long-term temporary housing to find and FEMA claims and insurance negotiations to deal with, Hurricane Sandy victims have enough to handle before they add the replacement of cars and trucks to their list.

More than 250,000 vehicles are estimated to have been written off, and while used car prices seem to have risen, dealers throughout New York are looking to support their communities by offering employee pricing, reduced financing and other perks to help them get back on the road.

Major manufacturers have made donations totaling multimillions to funds raising money for victims  with Honda, Toyota, BMW, Volvo, Nissan, Chrysler, Mazda,  Hyundai and Volkswagen all involved.

On top of the cash contributions to be used however the relief funds wish, now New York dealerships are working hard to help get people back on the road at least even though in some cases thousands of brand new unsold vehicles were destroyed on their lots (Chrysler, Toyota and Honda decided to write off more than new 15,000 cars).

"Hurricane Sandy has disrupted many people's lives and many are now just getting their lives back together, dealing with house insurance, flood insurance, damages and much more," said Brian Benstock, vice president and general manager of Paragon Auto Group.

"We want to provide assistance so that those affected can resolve their vehicle issues not only as easily as possible but as safely as possible."

Paragon Auto Group's Vehicle Replacement Program is open to all New York area residents whose vehicles have sustained damage due to Hurricane Sandy are eligible for assistance in the replacement or repair of their vehicle.

Trees lie fallen across parked cars in  Brooklyn  the morning after Superstorm Sandy made landfall.

As so many cars are completely unusable, the program allows those affected to have their vehicles picked up for assessment and repair free of charge. Paragon works directly with the insurance companies to ensure claims are properly handled, and all repaired vehicles will be subjected to a thorough safety and mechanical inspection to ensure that the vehicle is properly assessed and repaired fully. Additionally, all work and repairs are covered under warranty.

Those who suffer a total loss or would like to replace their vehicle will qualify for special incentives on new vehicles, including reduced APR rates, zero-down purchase options, and no payments required for 90 days.

Other dealers are working toward the same ends. "The loss in personal property is enormous," said Curt Skaluba, East Region manager of sales, parts and service operations for Ford Motor Company. "We're offering customers affected by Hurricane Sandy a $500 bonus cash savings off vehicle MSRP toward the purchase or lease of any eligible 2012 or 2013 model year Ford or Lincoln vehicle."

The $500 Disaster Relief Bonus Cash program is open to current residents of the mid-Atlantic and Northeast affected by Hurricane Sandy until January 2013. The $500 incentive is available on both retail and leases, and is transferable within the household."

Ryan Ruch of Lester Glenn Auto Group in Seaside Heights, one of the hardest-hit areas in the region, says, "We represent a lot of auto manufacturers, and different ones are giving different incentives to victims of the storm. Buick, GMC and Chevy are offering $500 rebates in disaster relief, and Mazda is also doing $500.

"Hyundai is doing $750, and Subaru is doing $500. Since we're more of a volume dealership, we'd rather sell you a car you can afford, and we can offer you a lower price if your car was totaled during Hurricane Sandy. Just come in with documentation and we'll help get you rolling again."

Out in Bayside, Theo Theodorou, director of business development at Star Nissan says: "We're doing quite a few things. For every car that we sell — new, used, whatever it is we're donating $25 to the Red Cross relief efforts aiding victims of the storm.

"We also have a 'Vehicle Purchase Program' for customers affected by the hurricane, where customers who buy new cars will pay what we as employees will. It applies to all the models on the floor except the Nissan GT-R and Nissan Versa Sedan S trim."

Igor Tselnik, General Manager of Premium Nissan in New Rochelle, says, "Anyone who lost a car in the hurricane gets employee pricing, and in addition to any and all discounts, they get up to $1,650 in rebates. We're offering that on every vehicle except the GT-R. Customers also get a 90-day deferment on all retail purchases, so for three months, they don't have to make a car payment. They'll also get a reduced annual percentage rate, depending on their financials."
