Residents living in the Rockaways are getting around a little easier today as the new H train shuttle is now up and running.

It is the first time trains have run in the Rockaways since Sandy hit three weeks ago.

The free shuttle service will run every 15 minutes between 4 a.m. and 1 a.m. making all stops between the Far Rockaway-Mott Avenue station and the Beach-90th Street-Holland station.

Day and night, victims of Hurricane Sandy have been streaming into ad hoc emergency rooms and relief centers, like the MASH-type medical unit on an athletic field in Long Beach, and the warming tent in the Rockaways the size of a small high school gym.

They complain of rashes, asthma and coughing. They need tetanus shots because — house-proud and armed with survivalist instincts — they have been ripping out waterlogged boards and getting poked by rusty nails.

What has been conspicuously absent from the areas of New York City hardest hit by Superstorm Sandy are shelters set up by the American Red Cross, an organization that as part of its mission statement provides shelter in times of disaster. The organization states in its shelter operations manual: "When large groups of people are temporarily displaced from their homes, the American Red Cross responds by opening and operating shelters."

In the immediate aftermath of the storm, the Red Cross held several emergency training sessions for shelter volunteers (I attended a November 2 session), telling classes that they needed to plan for a three-day stint away from home and be able to lift heavy loads.

FEMA trailers full of food and supplies untouched

abclocal.go.com - November 19th, 2012 - Jim Hoffer

So many people are still suffering and a long way from recovery in the wake of Sandy, which makes this story all the more puzzling.

Why are millions of pounds of food and water just sitting in tractor trailers in Brooklyn, unused, when so many people could use them?

FEMA tells us they have stockpiled millions of pounds of food and water in the event of another storm hitting the area.

On a tour of storm-ravaged Staten Island, President Barack Obama assured residents of one of the worst-hit areas in the New York region that they were not alone.

"During difficult times like this, we're reminded that we're bound together and we have to look out for each other," Obama said from a Staten Island street where so much had been demolished by Superstorm Sandy.

As he had done before his visit, Obama vowed to lend federal help to victims of the storm.

A Volunteer's Story ~ Brett A. Scudder

Brett A. ScudderI couldn't sleep last night. The thoughts/visions of the deplorable conditions building up in #TheRockaways was enough to keep me tossing and turning all night. A horrific vision of a massive amount of people just falling seriously ill a year from now brought chills over me.

Sandy Victims Receive Building Violations via AOL Video

Homeowners in Breezy Point, New York received notices for "failing to maintain their building," that also threatened legal action against them. The notices outraged homeowners and representatives. According to a spokesperson for the Buildings Department, the violations were a formality issued to document the damage that occurred and do not carry any monetary penalties for the property owner.
