District of Columbia Mayor Signs 50% Renewable Energy Standard

Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) has signed legislation to push the nation's capital towards 50% renewable energy within the next 15 years, a goal she says will increase residents' access to clean energy while also creating jobs and new businesses.

The goal includes promises to serve 100,000 low-income residents with solar energy by 2032 and reduce their power bills by 50%.

To meet anticipated demand for solar energy, the city has partnered on a jobs program to provide District young adults with paid training in solar panel installation, energy efficiency, and basic safety and construction skills.

America's shrinking middle class, a growing concern for the economy and a central issue in the presidential race, cuts across virtually all communities from coast to coast, according to a study released Wednesday.

The report by Pew Research Center found that the share of the middle class fell in 203 of the 229 U.S. metropolitan areas examined from 2000 to 2014, including major cities such as New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, which saw a relatively sharp drop in its middle class.

Reducing Climate Change Would 'Create One Million Jobs'

As the March 31 deadline for countries to submit their proposals for tackling irreversible climate change passes, a new report claims lives could be spared, the climate could be saved from catastrophic and irreversible change, and one million jobs could be created if green policies are initiated.

The report from the New Climate Institute (NCI) - a green pressure group - says more ambitious action to reverse climate change would yield even greater economic and social co-benefits in the form of job creation and a healthier climate.

Mayor de Blasio Reveals $10 Million Plan To Create Thousands Of NYC Tech Jobs

. . .The big plan entailed the creation of the "NYC Tech Talent Pipeline," an initiative de Blasio said will be dedicated to creating "high-quality jobs" for New Yorkers up and down the tech ecosystem chain. He didn't provide many details, but the $10 million plan will be backed by JP Morgan Chase, among other banking giants.

Mayor de Blasio also hinted at his plans for widespread connectivity, saying that a "vibrant democracy" runs through "universal, high-speed broadband access." Of note was a plan to blanket 95 blocks of Harlem in free Wi-Fi, in addition to a plan to transform the city's unused subway pay phones into wireless stations.
