ABC News - The Lookout - Mold Inspections - Wednesday - May 29, 2013 - 10:00pm

Tue, 2013-05-28 13:33 — Kathy Gilbeaux

submitted by Bill Sothern - May 29, 2013

A new ABC news program called the Lookout debuts tonight (at 10pm) and features a segment examining the sometimes dubious practices of mold inspectors and contractors as they conduct an inspection of a high-end suburban NJ home.  Myself and Prof. Richard Shaughnessy of U. of Tulsa provide the play by play and color commentary (no scripts, no rehearsals) while the hidden cameras capture the diverse conclusions of the good guys and bad guys as they present their findings and recommendations to the homeowner.

NYCC - Forgotten - How the City Has Failed Sandy Victims in The Rockaways

Mon, 2013-03-04 18:26 — Kathy Gilbeaux

submitted by David Perez

nycommunities.org

The mold and habitability crisis in the Rockaways is unfortunately getting worse rather than improving. . . Fortunately, there is a simple solution.

According to the Office of the Public Advocate, FEMA will not reimburse homeowners for mold remediation; the agency will, however, compensate New York City for costs incurred due to mold. Mayor Bloomberg and New York City should implement a mold and sheetrock removal program immediately that stops the public health crisis and reimburses homeowners for expenses related to mold remediation. It is in the power of the city to take action, but it has refused to do so in a comprehensive, holistic way that would be cost-effective, efficient, and responsible.

Neighborhood Revitalization NYC

Fri, 2013-03-01 22:46 — Kathy Gilbeaux

lisc.org

Overview

On Thursday, January 31, 2013, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and the Mayor’s Office of Housing Recovery Operations announced a new initiative to address water damage and treat mold in homes impacted by Hurricane Sandy. Using private money raised to assist victims of Hurricane Sandy, the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City has launched a remediation program to remove mold in approximately 2,000 homes in the hardest hit areas. In partnership with the American Red Cross and the Robin Hood Foundation, the Mayor’s Fund is sponsoring a $15 million remediation program that will be administered by Neighborhood Revitalization NYC (NRNYC), an affiliate of the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC). Neighborhood Revitalization NYC will coordinate mold treatment that will be performed at no cost to the homeowner by private contractors and not-for-profit organizations. Homeowners can find more information on how to apply for this program here.

A Living, Lurking Threat in Sandy-Hit Homes: Mold

Sat, 2013-02-09 11:55 — Amanda Cole

Submitted by Henry Rodriguez

Esther Tauscher stood outside her Staten Island home, leafing through boxes of family photos that had been steeped in storm water. She paused to point out life events — her honeymoon, holding her baby boy in a hospital bed.

The photos are just about all she has left. Behind her, the home where she and her family lived for 14 years was being dismantled by a masked volunteer crew that tossed out her possessions and ripped out floorboards and walls.

It was Tauscher’s only option. Her house and nearly everything in it was consumed by mold.

Unexpected Focus at a Mayoral Forum

Mayoral Forum

This year’s campaign for New York City mayor was expected to turn on police tactics, education policy and economic development.

On Thursday, six of the leading candidates in the race found themselves discussing something different: mold.

The hazardous fungus, and its proliferation in homes and neighborhoods damaged by Hurricane Sandy, took center stage at a Brooklyn church during a forum on housing policy, an early clash in a race whose candidates are still looking for ways to stand out.

Hurricane Sandy slammed into New York and New Jersey nearly three months ago, and the grueling recovery effort continues with work being done to repair, rebuild and reopen shattered homes and businesses. But the process has been uneven, and there is ample evidence that many people are still struggling in the aftermath of one of the most vicious storms to hit the region. Following are snapshots of how some people and places are faring on the road back.
