Hard-Hit Residents Say They Just Want To Know When They Can Rebuild

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Buried under a mountain of debt and debris, one month to the day after Sandy, storm survivors are struggling to adjust to a new reality.

Residents are still trying to figure out where to live and if they can rebuild. Their frustrations were felt Thursday night on Staten Island at a meeting so packed many people had to be turned away.

Hundreds of victims jammed the auditorium at New Dorp High School beyond capacity, forcing hundreds of others into a hallway, fueling frustrations, CBS 2′s Emily Smith reported.

Hurricane Sandy Emergency Update

Mayor Bloomberg has signed an emergency order to establish an odd-even license plate system for gasoline and diesel purchases to reduce wait times and lines at gas stations in the five boroughs.The temporary odd-even system will remain in effect until further notice, and details of the operation can be found here.

Hurricane Sandy - Voice & Text Program FAQs

Dear Valued Customer,

Verizon Wireless continues to focus its efforts to assist customers in the regions hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy. We announced November 4th that customers in portions of New York and New Jersey will not be billed usage charges for domestic voice and text usage incurred between October 29th and November 16th 2012. No action is required by our customers to be eligible for this program.

The following Q&A was made available to assist with additional program details.

Victims Need Information on a Regular Basis - One Long Beach Building is Doing a Good Job

Immediately after the storm, as victims assessed their damage, they wanted to know that the authorities were aware of their situation and were working towards solutions.  Some concerns that were voiced to me were:

  • People living in homes next door to each other were given varying estimates as to when power would be restored: the shortest estimate was 2 days; the longet was 10 days.  This was disconcerting to the residents.
  • Condos and Co-ops that had their own websites were not posting any information
  • Employees didn't know the status of their workplace
