Course Details
This course is aimed at providing, online, information on Food Protection and Safety and the opportunity to prepare for the final examination for the New York City Department of Health's Food Protection Certificate.
While access to the course material remains free, as of March 29th, 2010, anyone wishing to take the final examination will have to pay a fee of $24.00 for the exam and a convenience fee of $0.60, a total of $24.60. A credit card is needed for this transaction. Acceptable credit cards include AMEX, Discover, Mastercard & Visa (Following are not accepted at this time: Bank debit cards, Debit Mastercards or Debit Visa).
Anyone charged with supervising the food operations of a food service establishment or non-retail food processing establishment is required to have this certificate. A person holding this certificate must be on the premises and must supervise all food preparation activities during all hours of the food establishment's operation.
This online course is designed to fit into your busy schedule and there is no time limit for completing it. The course is divided into 15 lessons, each of which will take you about one hour to finish. There is a short quiz at the end of each lesson. You must answer all the questions in the quiz for each lesson correctly before you can move on to the next lesson.
Once you register, you'll receive an email with your User ID and Password. Please keep these in a safe place as you will need them each time you login to the website.
Taking the Exam
After you have successfully completed all 15 lessons, you have the option of paying the required fee and taking the final examination. The exam fee is payable through credit cards only. While registering for the exam you will be able to select an exam date and time. At the completion of the registration you will receive a confirmation document that you must bring with you to the examination along with identification.
Acceptable identification includes:
-Driver's license or Non-driver's photo identification
-Current alien registration card or naturalization certificate with photo identification
-Current U.S. or foreign passport with photo identification
-Current photo identification issued by federal, state, or local government agency
The final exam consists of 50 written questions and lasts one hour. You must answer 70% or more of the questions correctly to qualify for the Food Protection Certificate. If you fail, you have to re-register and take this course and exam again.
If successful, your certificate will be mailed to you after two weeks. Please be sure to enter your correct mailing address when you register for the course.

Trains: No.6 to 116th Street and Lexington Avenue. (Walk or use the M116 bus to First Avenue),
Nos. 4 and 5 to 125th Street. (Walk to First Avenue)
Buses: M15 and M116 to First Avenue.
Cars: F.D.R. Drive, exit on 116th Street
Parking: Street parking is extremely difficult. Check the Yellow Pages of your telephone directory for parking garages.
