The NYPD has traded in its handcuffs for chain saws and sump pumps.

Members of the elite Emergency Services Unit have become heroes to the victims of Hurricane Sandy by removing trees and pumping out flooded basements — and Monday, officers helped out in hard-hit areas of Rockaway and Staten Island.

“It’s a slow and meticulous process,” said Lt. Matthew McCarthy. “You don’t know what’s in the water in some of these basements.”
