The foundation, responsible for a $10 million relief drive, raised the money from individual contributors worldwide.

Some 30,000 members of the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation celebrate Buddha's birthday at the Liberty Square in Taipei, Taiwan, on May 13. Volunteers with the organization are visiting areas slammed by Superstorm Sandy to meet those who may be eligible for funding. Storm vicims can call 877-889-8244 for information.

New York City  victims of Hurricane Sandy may be eligible for $600 Visa debit cards in a $10 million relief drive initiated by an international Buddhist organization.

City Controller John Liu announced the plan Sunday with representatives of the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation and other religious organizations.

The foundation raised the money from individual contributors around the world. Most families identified as eligible for the help will get $600 in the form of the debit card.

Tzu Chi volunteers are going around hard-hit neighborhoods to meet eligible people. Storm victims also can call the foundation at 877-889-8244.
