(CNN) -- It has been in operation only since October 30, but the Facebook page for "Giving back to those affected by Sandy" has a longer timeline than most Facebook members.

The page, started by the group "BK girls give back," began as a way to help people stranded in areas with no cell service or way to communicate after the superstorm. Soon, it took on a life of its own. Shelters in need of supplies, residents in need of a ride, organizations needing volunteers and even people who lost and found pets all posted on the timeline.

Thanks to social networks, grassroots relief efforts scaled quickly and efficiently in Sandy's aftermath, giving them a bigger presence in many places than even the established aid agencies.

On the day Hurricane Sandy decimated entire neighborhoods of New York, Andy Wandilak offered to feed and shelter the family of a musician who plays at his restaurant. The guy's descriptions of the storm's aftermath were tragic. So Andy started cooking. He used Facebook and Twitter to ask the restaurant's patrons for support.

This song is for my fellow volunteers who did time in Rockaway, NY that first few weeks after Hurricane Sandy, and for all the folks who are struggling still in freezing/moldy homes, and within a system that needs to catch up to their life threatening needs, hear them out, and help them now, before another ice-block week passes.

Three days after Congress passes The Sandy Relief Bill, as critical needs continue in the New York area, Third Wave Volunteer Alison Thompson gives a second report from The Rockaways.

As the first sustained cold weather settles into the area, thousands upon thousands remain without heat and electric.

Thanksgiving Day 2012
Driving back to my home that I left over three weeks ago, I pass trees and familiar landscapes that I have seen a thousand times, and see them today like I have seen them for the first time.

Suggested guidance for Volunteers working in Rockaway:

Indeed, hand washing frequently, not touching their eye, nose our mouth and wearing a dust mask are essential steps out of doors.   Working in an area with high level of mold is particularly dangerous and requires a higher level of respiration protection than just a simple dust mask.   Also, clothing worn inside a home contaminated with significant mold should be doffed (taken off) outside of their homes and not brought inside unless rolled up, bagged and sealed until they can be placed directly into a washing machine to avoid introducing mold spores into their own homes. Respiration protection should not be removed until thee clothes are doffed and secured.     Ideally, those working inside of mold contaminated homes should wear disposable TYVEK outer wear or overalls or something similar, gloves and eye protection that can be doffed outside and put directly into trash bags for disposal.   Then they should shower thoroughly.
